To be the bad man, to be the sad man

And no one knows, what it's like to be hated
To be fated to telling only lies •

Damon Salvatore is a highly complex person (vampire) to try and understand. There is much more to him than his flirtatious, cocky playboy attitude. He's a lot like his brother that way. He doesn't get very close to people, even if he is a highly social personality. He hates letting people in on his feelings, because he feels unsafe and weird. He's given up on his emotions altogether.
In reality, Damon is actually longing for acceptance, and very isolated and lonely because of his years as a vampire. As a human, he wasn't accepted for who he was and often was reprimanded by his father for his actions and choices.
He's convinced himself that he's a no good, inhumane creature of the night, because he fears that if he doesn't remember that then the switch which he turned off will turn back on. He doesn't want to handle the pain and human emotions. He really does know how to care and would do anything for the ones who receive it, but he covers this sense of fear and protectiveness with dry humor and heavy sarcasm.
He can be extremely loving and selfless despite his arrogance and proud nature and he would never admit it but he misses being human more than anything in the world.
His cocky, arrogant attitude might seem intimidating to people which is exactly what he wants. He hates feeling vulnerable and is prone to escaping from his emotions. He does this by relying on alcohol and his bloodlust, using his instincts as a vampire to brutal extents. He's highly unstable in those moments. But in all reality, he is just a broken man who tries not to feel intense pain and rejection and unhappiness from not getting anything in his life.

»»History:
Damon Salvatore was born in Mystic Falls, to the wealthy, well known Salvatore family. Being the first born son, he was doted on by his mother, learning different habits from her and getting pampered at a young age. His father on the other hand, always had high expectations from him, because of which he was never proud of his son. After seven years of running around and keeping himself busy, Damon welcomed the new addition to the family, his baby brother Stefan. Most would expect rivalry and jealousy but Damon didn't care. He'd finally found somebody who looked up to him and truly loved him. They became the best of friends, spending almost all their time together. of course, all of that changed in 1864, soon after Damon turned twenty four.
When Katherine Pierce came to live with them, he was smitten. He followed her around, infatuated as he watched her and did almost everything she told him to. For the first time, Damon grew a bit envious of his brother, trying to catch her attention and prove that his love was better. When she finally revealed her true nature to them, he wasn't scared. In his head, it was a perfect world. She would use Stefan, let him grow old and die, while he became a vampire and spent eternity with her. He knew she compelled his love and his was real. He started to readily drink her blood, always keeping some in his system in case he were to suddenly face death.
Things seemed perfect until his father, tired of his son lounging around, demanded that he join the Confederate Army. He reluctantly agreed, but during the war all he could think of was how he missed her and how she might fall for Stefan. Too scared to lose her, he left and came back. But he noticed the hushed up conversations and tension and he realized what was happening. The day his brother came and asked him if they should tell, he felt truly scared for Katherine, and made Stefan promise not to tell. You can imagine the extreme heart break and betrayal he felt when he heard the screams and shouts from across the hall one night. He tried his best to stop them but in vain. Not wanting to let her die, he hatched a plan with Stefan to save her, on the agreement that it was the last thing they'd do, since it was all his fault. But the attempts were fruitless when they both got shot and died.
Damon was the first to wake up, with heightened emotions and realizing that there was still hope, he left his unconscious brother to go to the church. He begged Emily to place a spell on the tomb, in return for protecting her family and future generations. He vowed to not transform because when he saw the church go up in flames so did his reason to live. But it was useless, because Stefan completed the transformation before him and forced him to turn too, despite his attempts to make him stop. However Emily told him that the spell had been successful and he found something to look forward to, albeit the long wait.
When they were fully turned, Damon warned Stefan to watch his back because he'd make his life hell for the rest of eternity. He left his ripper brother in the care of Lexi and travelled, always managing to keep an eye on Stefan from a distance. Whenever he seemed to happy, he'd drop in to taunt him, scare him and leave a track of bodies for his brother and his companions to deal with. He didn't care. He'd spend the next hundred and forty five years torturing him until he got Katherine back.
In 2009, he returned to his hometown, only to find his brother starting school their. When he saw that Elena Gilbert looked exactly like Kathy, he decided to stay longer than intended and came to a reluctant truce with his brother. He tried everything to find a way to break the spell, but when he found out that Katherine had left him all those years ago, he was unable to take the pain and rejection. He started to rely on his bloodlust, killing people. He found himself drawn to Elena instead. Part of him was truly falling for her and part of him wanted to torture his brother and the memory of Katherine. Over time though, he really did fall for Elena and grew close to her, unable to stay away despite the multiple times he hurt her. She brought out the human side of him which he found himself missing.
When Katherine came back and admitted that she'd never loved him, he felt like he'd been slapped. All those years of missing her seemed like nothing and he grew cold and impossible. He tried to hate her but couldn't, although he managed to maintain a level of detachment and indifference towards her. He wanted to kill her because of what she did, yet kiss her because he still cared. He just wasn't going to let himself get used again.
When he found a friend in Rose, he came to terms with the fact that he might not have to always run from his human side and he tried to help himself. He still found it weird, alien and difficult, but he did his best, what with his sense of protectiveness over his brother and his heart undecided between Katherine and Elena.
But it was futile when he had to kill her and felt as if there was no point in really caring. He killed and murdered people, admitting multiple times that he couldn't be what Elena wanted him to be. Yet he found himself trying to keep his blood lust in control because even though he "gave her up" she still had a strong hold on him.
Now that his brother is off the rails, Elena is growing closer to him and Katherine proving to be an ally, he can't decide which of his three weaknesses to put first...his troubled brother or both girls of which he can't decide who he loves more?

Damon tapped his foot on the carpet, while swirling the scotch, spiked with blood in the glass. He was confused and beyond annoyed. Liz was starting to worry about the town's safety and was looking up to him like he was some sort of god who could fix everything, Katherine was making his life hell as usual and Stefan and Elena were running around, in love with each other. It was pathetic. He took a sip, his hands clenching around the glass, before he let go, careful not to let it break. He pinched the bridge of his nose, and sighed. The return of Katherine was not helpful at all. Aside from the obvious rejection he'd gotten from her, he found himself needing to protect Elena and his own heart from the two directions it was being in pulled in. "Damon, get a hold of yourself," he mumbled, then sighed. The last thing he needed was Stefan and his girlfriend over hearing his self pitying inner monologue. He drained the glass and moved to refill it, calling out "Stefan, you home?". When he got no noise, he shrugged and started to head to his room.
He went to the bathroom, shedding his shirt and letting the glass sit on the granite slab. He looked sad, he told himself, shaking his head at his reflection. He ruffled his hair and then gave up, stripping off the rest of his clothes and turning the shower on. The hot water and steam felt good on his skin and he rested his palm on the glass partition on front of him. Elena. Katherine. Blood. Elena. Katherine. Blood. Moonstone. Blood. He slammed the glass, glad that it was reinforced as he pushed his wet hair out of his face. He moved out of the shower and froze in place. He was sure he'd heard something. Keeping the shower on, he moved slowly to the edge of the bathroom wall. There was another blur of movement and he felt hands around his neck. He spun and crashed into the floor, pinning the creature to the floor. He bared his fangs, feeling the veins around his eyes pop out, before he sighed and loosened his grip. "You need to stop doing that, or I might stake you next time," he sneered, standing up, unashamed from his lack of clothing.
He towel dried himself, before pulling on a fresh set of clothes. He walked out and spiked the scotch with blood. Sometimes he wished he didn't have to, that he was the sweet, innocent Damon he used to be who was such a gentleman. And the other part of him wished it was the only thing he did, walking, ripping, tearing, killing. He could deal with petty human drama and he could deal with his humanity switched off. But he couldn't deal with the heightened sense of confusion. He felt a pair of eyes on him and he turned to stare back, mockingly at Rose. She was sitting on his bed, legs crossed and silently observing him. "If you're going to hang around me all the time, you need to be able to talk. I may not be all cuddly-conversations but I don't mind spitting a few words once in a while." He offered her some scotch and moved to open the curtains.
The sunlight streaming in, warmed his skin and he closed his eyes, enjoying the feel of it. He heard commotion and saw Rose, only she wasn't visible. Only a bundle of blankets, from where she was hiding. "I'm sorry, is the sunlight bothering you?" he asked, pouting. He saw her peak and give him a "Duh, idiot," expression. He cocked and eyebrow. "Well, too bad."
